Mako Bice Scholarship
On March 11, we lost one of our most beloved members, Mako Bice. Mako came to this country as a young bride from Japan. Both being strong, fearless, and compassionate people, she and Burt helped found our chapter with Lexi and Lisa. Mako always welcomed members new and old with a sincere smile and a funny story. The old expression "she lights up the room when she enters" describes her warm personality perfectly.
We of Melbourne PFLAG are establishing a scholarship in her name. Mako loved learning, and books especially. The Mako Bice Scholarship will cover text books, or lab fees and other expenses, that frequently may not be covered by generic scholarships.
Goodbye, Mako. We will miss you always.

Can anyone attend meetings without joining?
Yes! You are not required to pay membership fees to attend meetings. So why bother joining? Part of each paid membership fee belongs to PFLAG National. We work for equality at both the local and national level while PFLAG National advocates on the national level. PFLAG National provides many members-only educational opportunities. PFLAG Academy, a series of worthwhile online webinars, is offered several times a month free to paid members. Membership fees help us obtain educational materials within our own chapter.
Did You Know?
PFLAG Melbourne/Space Coast has a small lending library
Our PFLAG of Melbourne Library has hundreds of books that may be borrowed (a few at a time, please). Social and Psychological information, GLBT Legal and Social issues in our American culture, are available as well as Biographies, and Autobiographies, about well-known and some obscure GLBT individuals, and History of Homosexuality. We even have some books for children with “two daddies” or those who find themselves “just different” from the other kids in some way.
A significant number of quality Fiction and Periodicals have been added recently that can enrich the lives of GLBT readers and their friends. Please ask to see a list of our PFLAG of Library holdings the next time you come to one of our meetings.
Many thanks to our volunteer librarian: "Ye Olde Librarian," Jim.

Lisa and Lexi, formerly of Melbourne, and one of their children were the feature photo! This happily married couple was interviewed for a Florida Today article recognizing the fact that the number of lesbian and gay couples openly (and proudly!) stating their relationship status has doubled here in Brevard County.

ZEBRA HOUSE in ORLANDO!
Fantastic news was brought to us from the President of PFLAG Orlando at our meeting last July.
From the ZEBRA COALITION site:
"Recently, Zebra Coalition acquired an official home in downtown Orlando, known as Zebra House. Our new home will be used for many purposes. Coalition staff will use the house as an office space to operate our hotline and address the needs of youth that come to us for assistance. Zebra House will temporarily accommodate homeless LGBTQ youth overnight while their needs are being assessed. The house will also be used as a meeting space for a few of our partners, including Orlando Youth Alliance and the Center for Drug-Free Living."
