Main Monthly Support Meetings FAQ
Q: Does it cost anything to attend monthly peer support meetings?
A: Nope, monthly peer support meetings are completely free for attendees.
Q: Who can attend?
A:Everyone! There are many different types of people, adults and teens, who come to PFLAG meetings. All are welcome. You always have a home in PFLAG.
Q: Do I have to become a PFLAG member?
A: Nope. Although we do hope you will consider supporting PFLAG by joining the chapter. Membership ($15) supports all the work PFLAG National does and anything donated past that amount goes to support our chapter expenses and helps cover the cost of our other events and projects. You can also support the chapter by making donations, volunteering, or by attending fundraising events.
Q: Do I have to make an appointment or let someone know I plan to attend?
A: Normally, no. Due to Covid however we have limited seating and so we do currently require pre-registering. Eventbrite links will be posted on our website and social media. We will update when we no longer require sign ups.
Q: Is this run by a therapist or counselor?
A: Nope, PFLAG chapters are volunteer and peer led. Our facilitators do undergo PFLAG regional facilitator training but we are not professionals. If you are in search of a LGBTQ+ affirming licensed professional, message us and we will send you resources.
Q: Do I need a reason to attend a meeting?
A: Nope, you do not have to have a crisis or be associated with anyone in the LGBTQ+ community. You can simply come. Often the stories that we share prompt others to share, and our stories can help each other.
Q: Why do people attend?
A: Each of us comes for a different reason.
-- LGBTQ+ people come to a PFLAG meeting for:
* learning from other family members and allies how they can tell the people in their own lives that they are LGBTQ+.
* to help other people adjust to the news that someone they know is LGBTQ+
* to connect with others in similar situations as them
-- Parents and family members come to get support from other parents and family members who have been through similar experiences.
-- Spouses of LGBTQ+ persons come because they want to support their spouses and their families.
-- Transgender people and their parents come because they want to get support and share about what it is like to have a family member transition.
-- Allies and friends come to meetings to support a friend that is LGBTQ+
-- To learn how to handle LGBTQ+ issues that face them in today's society, and how to stand up for the rights of LGBTQ+ people
-- To connect with other folks in their community who care about and are working for equal rights for the LGBTQ+ folks.
-- and many other reasons...
Q: What usually happens at meetings?
A. PFLAG meetings can vary from chapter to chapter. They usually start off with reading our mission statement, reminding everyone that whatever is hared be kept in confidence, and then go into introductions. Introductions are done with whatever one feels comfortable saying which can be from just a persons name to giving their name, why there are there, if they are or a loved one is LGBTQ+, if they are involved in the LGBTQ+ community as a possible resource for others. After introductions we will ask if anyone has anything specific they would like support with. Then we share announcements of various LGBTQ+ events and news. Sometimes we have a guest speaker to talk on a topic about the LGBTQ+ community. we do announce ahead of time, that would speak the first 20 minutes once we start our meeting. We then have socializing at the very end.
Q: I'm not comfortable in large groups, is there a way to meet with PFLAG MSC members without attending the meeting?
A: Yes, of course! We understand that it can be difficult for newcomers and to attend their first meeting. We've all been the new person at one time. Just email us and let us know what you are looking for support in, if you prefer in person, email, or a phone call, and we can match you up with one of our experienced members to get in contact with.
Q: How often do people attend meetings?
A: People come as often as they want. You are under no obligation to PFLAG Melbourne Space Coast. We hope that you find the PFLAG chapter welcoming. People often come back after they have resolved their initial anxieties because they want to give support to others who are coming to a PFALG meeting for the first time. We try to follow up. If a meeting is not what you expected, let us know. There are lots of different ways to hold the meetings, and people can have many different experiences. If you didn't feel you got what you needed from a PFLAG meeting, we encourage you to talk with a PFLAG MSC board member to make sure that we hear your story and concerns.
